Answers from the EXPOL technical team on choosing, sizing and using our specialised polystyrene products.
EXPOL Garage Door Insulation is a DIY retrofit solution designed to insulate existing sectional garage doors. The kit uses lightweight EPS insulation panels fitted into the garage door sections, together with internal liners for a neat finished appearance.
The insulation is measured and cut to suit the individual door panels and installed to the inside of the existing garage door. This allows the thermal performance of the door to be improved without replacing the entire garage door.
Yes. Insulating a garage door reduces heat transfer through the door, helping reduce the amount of heat entering or escaping the garage.
EXPOL Garage Door Insulation can help make a garage warmer in winter and cooler in summer. This can be particularly useful where the garage is attached to the house or is used as a workshop, gym, hobby room, office or other living or working space.
Yes. EXPOL Garage Door Insulation is specifically designed as a retrofit solution for existing sectional garage doors.
The insulation is installed inside the existing garage door panels, so the complete garage door does not need to be replaced.
EXPOL Garage Door Insulation is designed for sectional garage doors.
The system is available in two thicknesses to suit different sectional door profiles: a 28mm option for embossed panel doors and a 35mm option for flat panel doors.
The 28mm and 35mm kits are designed for different sectional garage door profiles.
The 28mm kit is designed for embossed panel garage doors and provides an R0.65 insulation value. The 35mm kit is designed for flat panel garage doors and provides an R0.85 insulation value.
The correct kit depends on the profile and available space within the existing garage door panel.
EXPOL Garage Door Insulation is available in two options:
28mm EPS – R0.65, for embossed panel doors
35mm EPS – R0.85, for flat panel doors
R-value measures thermal resistance. A higher R-value indicates greater resistance to heat transfer through the insulation.
Yes. EXPOL Garage Door Insulation is designed as a DIY installation system.
The kit includes the EPS insulation panels, corflute liners, glue and installation instructions. Basic tools such as a tape measure, marker, straight edge and craft knife are generally required to measure and cut the panels to suit the door.
Insulating the garage door can help reduce heat loss through the door during colder weather, helping the garage retain more heat.
It can also reduce heat gain during warmer weather. The overall temperature of the garage will also depend on factors such as the walls, ceiling, windows, floor, ventilation and whether the garage is heated.
Yes. Adding insulation to an existing garage door increases its weight.
After installation, the door should continue to operate correctly and remain properly balanced. If the additional weight affects the spring tension or balance of the door, EXPOL recommends having the garage door assessed or adjusted by a qualified garage door technician.
Green Beans are designed to provide the same type of lightweight cushioning and support expected from traditional polystyrene bean bag filling.
The key difference is that Green Beans are made from 100% recycled polystyrene rather than virgin material, giving recovered polystyrene another use.
Yes. Polystyrene is recyclable, including polystyrene bean bag filling.
EXPOL has recycling programmes that recover polystyrene and turn it into new products. EXPOL has also run Bean Bag Take Back initiatives where old bean bag fill can be recovered and recycled rather than sent to landfill.
Yes, polystyrene bean bag filling can be recycled, although available collection options depend on the recycling service and programme operating in your area.
EXPOL has previously operated Bean Bag Take Back initiatives that recover old polystyrene bean bag filling and recycle it into new EXPOL products.
Check EXPOL's current recycling information for available take-back or collection options.
EXPOL Green Beans are available in three pack sizes:
25 litres
100 litres
250 litres
The 25L pack is suitable for smaller top-ups, while the larger 100L and 250L packs are suitable for larger bean bag refills or filling larger bean bags.
Green Beans provide a way to reuse recovered polystyrene instead of relying on virgin polystyrene bean bag filling.
EXPOL Green Beans are made from 100% recycled polystyrene and can be recycled again at the end of their useful life. This supports a circular approach where polystyrene is recovered, reused and recycled into new products.
EXPOL developed Green Beans specifically as a way to turn recovered polystyrene into a useful consumer product rather than sending the material to landfill.
