Step by Step Underfloor Insulation Installation Instructions

To assist you we’ve developed the easy step guide, follow it and you can’t go wrong.

Don’t forget to pick up your Expol Underfloor Easy Measure Ruler. Use it to measure the underfloor joist sizes, so you can purchase the correct panels for your DIY Insulation project.

Step 1

Step 2

Installation Step 1Place your Easy Measure Ruler or a tape measure against one side of the joist.
The opposite joist will fall within one of our 4 panel sizes. Joist sizes can vary, so be sure to measure more than one. You may need a few different panel sizes to complete the job.
Installation Step 2If the panel is too wide, simply slice down the appropriate concertina edge, leaving the panel approximately 5mm over sized to ensure a firm fit.

Step 3

Step 4

Installation Step 3Slide the panel between the joists, the concertina designed cuts will ensure a tight fit.The panel should be pushed up hard against thebottom of your floor leaving no air gap. Installation Step 4Fixings:
Once panel is installed tack
2 Expol Fixings in opposite corners to ensure Expol Underfloor will stay in place for the lifetime of your home.

Step 5

Step 6

Installation Step 5Electrical:
For cables that come into DIRECT contact with Expol Underfloor, place Expol Wireguard around the wires before installation.
Installation Step 6Pipes & Plumbing:
For obstacles such as pipes and plumbing use your sharp knife to cut the panel and notch around the difficult areas. For future maintenance, leave 100mm clearance around pipes and plumbing.

  • EXPOL-X
Installation:

The installation process of Expol concrete floor insulation is quick and easy. Simply butt the sheets together on top of the DPC (polythene). It is important that the polystyrene sheets are not placed under any footings or thickenings for load bearing walls.

The sheets can be taped together however this is not absolutely necessary. Once the sheets have been laid, place the reinforcing mesh on top using the required mesh chairs.
See our Masterspec document for further information

  • EXPOL ThermaSlab
Installation:
Expol ThermaSlab should be placed hard up against the retaining wall after the water proofing membrane or tanking has been applied. Expol ThermaSlab should be held in place while the drainage material is added. Expol supplies a construction adhesive for this purpose.

The sheets of ThermaSlab are used to give protection to the water proofing membrane or tanking on the retaining wall. This is important so the drainage material (scoria) does not damage the membrane.
Expol Thermaslab should cover all waterproofing membrane and tanking. The sheets of Expol ThermaSlab should not be exposed at the top of the wall.

  • EXPOL Styrodrain

Installation:
Expol StyroDrain polystyrene drainage board should be placed hard up against the retaining wall after the water proofing membrane or tanking has been applied. StyroDrain should be held in place while backfilling the retaining wall. Expol supplies a construction adhesive to secure the sheets to the wall before back filling.

Recyclable 6The sheets of StyroDrain are placed on top of 100mm perforated drain. The perforated drain is surrounded by drainage gravel and situated at the base of the retaining wall. On high reach retaining walls, a double thickness of StyroDrain along the base of the wall may be required allow for increased compression and better drainage.

Expol StyroDrain should cover all waterproofing membrane and tanking areas. The sheets of StyroDrain should not be exposed at the top of the wall.

  • EXPOL-X

Installation:
Expol-X should be placed hard up against the retaining wall after the water proofing membrane or tanking has been applied. Expol-X should be held in place while the drainage material is added. Expol supplies a construction adhesive for this purpose.

Expol-X is used to add insulation to the exterior of a retaining wall. It will also give protection to the water proofing membrane or tanking on the retaining wall This is important so the back fill material (scoria) does not damage the membrane.

Expol-X should cover all waterproofing membrane and tanking. The sheets of Expol-X should not be exposed at the top of the wall.

Installation:
When insulating masonry walls the insulation should be cut accurately to create a neat fit between the timber batons or strapping. It is also important to make sure that the insulation is maximized by using the correct thickness; this is determined by the thickness of the timber batons or strapping. The panels can be spot glued in place until the lining materials are fixed.

Care should be taken to ensure that there is no contact between the polystyrene and any electrical wiring.

  • Tuff Pod

Installation:

STAGE 1
Clear and level the site. A footprint of the building site can be outlined and a layer of fines spread over the area. Construct and erect the boxing and lay the damp proof membrane over the fines. Plumbing and services go in at this stage.

STAGE 2
The site is now ready for placement of Expol Polystyrene TUFF PODS, in conjunction with the Expol universal spacer, Wilton Joubert spacers or the Expol 100mm & 300mm spacers. The type of spacers will generally be determined by the engineer or specifier. Pods are placed 300mm in from the perimeter boxing and 100mm apart over the floor area, or as recommended in the engineer's schedule. Reinforcing steel is laid around the perimeter and between the pods. Steel mesh is then laid over the pods using bar chairs where necessary.

STAGE 3
The site is now ready for the pouring of concrete, which can be pumped or barrowed. The concrete should be vibrated and screeded as per normal practice and adequate curing time should be allowed. Remove the boxing after curing.

Installation:

When insulating skillion roofs the insulation should be cut accurately to create a neat fit between the rafters or purlins.
It is also important to make sure that the insulation is maximized by using the correct thickness; this is determined by the thickness of the rafters or purlins. There is a requirement for an air gap above the insulation, check with your architect or specifier for the exact measurement for your project.

Care should be taken to ensure that there is no contact between the polystyrene and any electrical wiring.
